Breaking Peace

No one prepares for peace
There are no stockpiles of party hats
Spirit weeks for empty ICU wards
Never a shortage of welcome mats

No savings accounts for cotton candy
Or slush funds for art galleries
Poets and singers never overbooked
No one frustrated by their extravagant salary

No one planning celebrations on a Tuesday
Just for fun because we’re alive and together
We don’t have lobbyists for community Bar-B-Que’s
No National response teams for wedding say weather

No one builds rockets to live stream the stars
The moon is absent of murals and interstellar artists
No national draft for the gathering of harvest

No one prepares for peace
At least not like they do for war
No contingencies or drills for vibrant life
We long for peace yet it’s never prepared for
