Push Notification

The alert banner flashes across my phone screen
“Mass shooting” it’s become familiar to read
A thousand ghosts haunt the headlines of terrorism
All inclusive carnage for adult and child victims
And yet I always remember the name of the shooter
But rarely recall those who were murdered
Then I watch as the news helps everyone take sides
Politicians giving statements and taking up air time
Callous; the dead are turned into numbers on a page
The American dream becomes the hope to retain a name
As grocery store aisles are turned into gun ranges
Nail salons, clubs, beaches and concerts in Las Vegas
Schools host active shooter drills for all ages
I watch in horror hoping that something changes
Artists cannot finish a memorial before starting anew
Trying to bring honor to the lost as the killing continues
And the notifications seem to keep coming
Maybe this time we will actually do something
