“Please follow social distancing and keep 6 feet apart”
I swallow deep at the wal-Mart sign I read
Everyone’s anxiety fogs up my glasses
My mask contains a cloud of recycled gases
I was sent to get supplies for our work
I realize society’s view of our worth
On the senate floor they call us essentials
Freely handing out super hero credentials
Throwing us into spandex, colorful costumes
Our willingness just gratefully assumed
Everyone knows what’s essentials are due
But also know it won’t be seen through.
Stay home, zoom call, drink and eat your snacks
Essentials carrying America’s life on their backs
As they always have.
