Before

Take it back to the ancients:

The days before colonization

Before the white mans gentrification

Back with the indigenous nations

A time without prison reservations

And boarding school re-education

The time when people had patience

Before the coming of slave ships

Before bloody arrowtips

Without offensive cultural appropriation

Before broken treaties and segregation

The land was still sacred

And protected without hesitation

With ceremony and celebration

Freedom without emancipation

Freedom from intoxication

No fear of cultural condemnation

No need to seek reclamation

War wasn’t the only salvation

But peace echoed throughout the nations

Sitting down to seek negotiation

Wisdom leading without hesitation

One blood, and one nation

But that was before colonization.
